INGREDIENTS

Puff pastry

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose, (315 g)
  • ¼ cup sugar, (50 g)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 200 g vegan margarine or butter, cold and diced
  • ½ - ¾ cup very cold water

Nutella

  • 150 g hazelnuts, roasted and peeled
  • 60 g dairy-free chocolate, melted
  • ½ tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon sugar or sweetener of your choice to taste
  • Pinch of salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Mix the flour, sugar and salt. Add the margarine and mix with your hands trying to form a gritty mixture, but without breaking the margarine pieces completely (the margarine pieces should be about the size of an almond).
  • Add the water little by little and mix with a silicone spatula until it forms a ball of dough. It should not be dry, crumbly or too wet (usually ½ cup of water is enough, but it can vary depending on the humidity of the place where you live).
  • Divide the dough into 2 parts and put them inside a plastic bag. Freeze for 1 hour.
  • While the doughs rest in the freezer, prepare the nutella by blending all its ingredients until you get a liquid consistency. Reserve.
  • Remove the dough from the freezer and on a piece of parchment paper, stretch it out with a rolling pin, it should be around 3-4 mm thick (you can sprinkle a little flour on top so that it does not stick to the rolling pin). It is important that you keep the dough as cold as possible, so if you live in a warm place, be careful not to take too long on this step.
  • Preheat the oven to 355°F (180°C).
  • Cut two large triangles from each piece of dough (you can include the trunk at the base of the triangle). Keep the leftover dough in the freezer to use later to make a pie crust, cookies, etc. or you can stretch it out again and make another tree.
  • Spread the nutella on one of the triangles and cover it with the other triangle. Make some cuts on both sides of the tree forming several strips from base to top (as shown in the recipe video). Twist each of the strips on both sides.
  • Bake for 30-33 minutes or until puff pastry is golden brown.
  • Once you have removed the tree from the oven, let it cool for 5 minutes and sprinkle a little icing sugar as decoration.
