Protein is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in building and repairing tissues, supporting muscle growth, and keeping you feeling satisfied. With the combination of vital wheat gluten and tofu in this recipe, these deli slices offer a protein-packed punch that will leave you feeling nourished and satisfied.

    Easy Homemade Seitan

Before we delve into the wonders of these Easy Homemade Seitan Deli Slices, let's talk about gluten.

    So... what’s gluten?

Gluten is a protein naturally found in wheat and other grains like barley and rye. It provides elasticity and structure to dough, resulting in that desirable chewy texture. In the context of our seitan deli slices, we utilize vital wheat gluten, also known as gluten flour, to create a delightful meat-like consistency. Don't worry if you have gluten sensitivities or follow a gluten-free diet, as there are gluten-free alternatives available for making similar plant-based deli slices.

    Okay, now, what about seitan?

Now, let's explore the star of the show: seitan. Seitan, often referred to as wheat meat, is a popular plant-based meat substitute made from gluten. Seitan has been cherished for centuries in Asian cuisine and has gained popularity worldwide as a savory and satisfying protein option for vegetarians and vegans alike. Its neutral flavor allows it to absorb marinades and seasonings, making it a versatile ingredient in various dishes.

    Easy Homemade Seitan

Whether you're a vegan, vegetarian, or simply looking to incorporate more plant-based options into your diet, these seitan deli slices will become your go-to choice for creating sandwiches, baguettes, and more. So, let's roll up our sleeves and get cooking!

Cooking Tips for these Easy Homemade Seitan Deli Slices

    • Liquid smoke adds a smoky flavor to the deli slices, giving them a rich and savory taste. You can omit it if you prefer a milder flavor.
    • Customize the seasoning: While the recipe provides a flavorful base, don't hesitate to adjust the seasonings according to your preferences. You can increase or decrease the amount of spices, add herbs, or experiment with different flavor profiles. Have fun and make it your own!
    • Resting time: After baking the deli slice log, allow it to cool slightly before unwrapping and slicing. This short resting time helps the slices to firm up and hold their shape, making them easier to handle and enjoy.
    • Thin and even slices: When slicing the log into deli slices, aim for thin and even cuts. A sharp knife works best for this, ensuring clean and smooth slices. If you desire thicker slices, adjust the cutting thickness accordingly.

Variations for these Easy Homemade Seitan Deli Slices

    1. Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to the mixture for a spicy twist.
    2. Herb Infusion: Incorporate your favorite herbs, such as rosemary or thyme, to enhance the flavor profile of the deli slices.
    3. BBQ Glaze: Brush the slices with your favorite barbecue sauce before baking for a tangy and irresistible touch.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    • Preheat the oven to 350ºF (176ºC).
    • In a food processor, add all the ingredients except for the gluten flour. Process until you obtain a well-integrated paste.
    • Add half of the gluten flour to the mixture in the food processor. Process the ingredients again until they are fully incorporated.
    • Add the second half of the flour and continue processing. At first, it may look "crumbly," but keep processing until the mixture starts to come together and form a ball.
    • Remove the dough and begin shaping it into a ham-like form (a slightly elongated ball) with your hands.
    • Place the seitan in the center of a piece of parchment paper and wrap it completely.
    • Then, place it on a piece of aluminum foil and wrap it again, making sure it is well sealed. This will help maintain moisture while baking.
    • Place the wrapped seitan on a baking tray and put it in the preheated oven.
    • Bake for approximately 1 hour or until the seitan log is firm and cooked.
    • Once baked, remove the seitan from the oven and let it cool slightly.
    • Carefully unwrap it from both papers and slice it very thinly with a sharp knife.

    NOTES

These vegan deli slices can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week and in the freezer for up to 4 months.
